CBD and Pets
You have probably heard a lot about CBD oil and at least some of its benefits by this point, right? Well if not, I will explain what CBD is and how it may be very beneficial for dogs, cats, and all vertebrate mammals.
What is CBD?
CBD is cannabidiol – which is the non-psychoactive component in cannabis. THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis that induces a “buzz” or a “high”. CBD, instead of causing a high, can provide effects of relaxation, calming, and pain relief without the intoxicating effects of THC. According to research, all vertebrate mammals have an endocannabinoid system. Our own and our pets endocannabinoid system (ECS) influences physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory. Both humans and dogs have the same natural endogenous cannabinoid system. These specific cannabinoid receptors sites are primarily located in the brain, central nervous system, organs, and immune cells.
Benefits of CBD for Dogs?
Although we can not make any claims that CBD cures or treats anything, CBD may be very beneficial for things such as:
- Anxiety – One thing that I hate to see, is a pup that has been prescribed an anti-anxiety medication that can often time do more harm than good and drastically affects the personality of your loved pet. We have had many customers over and over again express that they were able to wean their dogs off of things such as anti-anxiety medications after discovering CBD and what it could do for them and their dog!
- Arthritis – Unfortunately, humans and dogs are prone to arthritis in older age – but since CBD may be a powerful anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever, it makes itself stand out as an excellent solution to arthritic aches, pains, stiffness, and lethargy.
- Old Age – When our pups are getting up there in age – several things begin to take place. Often times, when old age sets in with dogs, as with humans, their ability to function begins to decline. This can mean inflammation and hindered mobility. When dogs get into their senior years, things like their eyesight and hearing can begin to deteriorate, which could lead to added things such as anxiety. Many customers have experienced excellent benefits to combat the ailments of old age for their loved pets.
The Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is perhaps one of the most important physiological body systems that we have. The main function of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain homeostasis throughout our body systems. This is how CBD can target such a wide variety of ailments throughout the body. All vertebrate mammals have been found to have an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is comprised of a few key pieces: Cannabinoid Receptors, Endocannabinoids, and Metabolic Enzymes. These pieces are critical to the ECS and to its ability to help bring us back to homeostasis. Cannabinoid receptors are found on the surface cells of our body and communicate information from outside of the cell in order to kick-start the appropriate cellular response. Endocannabinoids are the molecules that bind to and activate cannabinoid receptors. The two major cannabinoids that have been studied are anandamide and 2-AG. These cannabinoids are synthesized on demand and get used exactly when they are needed. Lastly, metabolic enzymes are the third piece of the puzzle. These enzymes quickly destroy the endocannabinoids once they are used. These enzymes ensure that endocannabinoids get used when they are needed but not for any longer than necessary.
